The Company

A global exhibition and conference organiser with large scale events across a multitude of sectors. They offer a dynamic, entrepreneurial and success driven culture of growth and innovation.

They are looking for a Head of Content to take ownership of the conference and content production for one of their largest grossing global event portfolios, serving the tech sector. The Head of Content will be responsible for the development and execution of the content strategy across the portfolio, both for live events and through their digital platforms. With a passion for content and proven track record (both personally and through a conference production team) in achieving results in a paid-for conference environment this role requires a hands-on approach.

Key Responsibilities for this Head of Content role

  • Develop the long-term content strategy and vision for events within your global event portfolio including thorough research on event direction and market opportunity
  • Develop the long-term digital content strategy, to ensure online and face-to-face interactions with the event brand deliver the same quality of content and achieve portfolio objectives
  • Secure buy-in for the vision and goals of the content team and proposition - internally and externally – working collaboratively with all functions
  • Build key industry partnerships to support content and overall portfolio goals
  • Develop and manage the production plan/schedule and resource allocation to ensure deadlines are met for both face-to-face events and online interactions
  • Work with sponsors to advise and guide on content for live shows, and exercise quality control to maintain the required standard
  • Recruit, retain, manage and develop your team to ensure you deliver innovative show content in line with the wider event and portfolio strategy
  • Manage the team with a comprehensive production schedule, KPI management and structure to ensure goals are achieved across the portfolio
  • Develop your team by identifying skills gaps and devising a training plan to fill the gaps including on the job coaching and training of the core content capabilities (briefs, speaker acquisition, research guidance, onsite delivery, digital delivery)
  • Personally, work on the flagship event in the portfolio and be heavily involved in the content production cycle for all events in the portfolio including attendance onsite
  • Oversee the production process within your portfolio to ensure that it meets best practice standards
  • Set the content timeline and milestones for each event (physical and digital)
  • Agree and adhere to the content budget
  • Attend external events to be part of the community and benchmark competitors; participate as a speaker where relevant
  • Establish yourself as a leader and authority within the wider team
  • Be the “voice” of content across the portfolio, ensuring visibility and understanding of content on each event working collaboratively with all functions

Skills and Experience required for this Head of Content position

  • Strong project management, planning and organisational skills in a commercial environment
  • Conference production and team management – experience in managing a conference/content production team to hit deadlines, KPI’s and achieve results
  • Experience of writing regular content.
  • Digital content delivery – experience developing and delivering a digital content programme in parallel with live events
  • Research skills - to plan a call campaign, carry out effective calls to uncover commercial insights and distil large volumes of information to understand the commercial landscape of deals, contracts and markets
  • Creativity - to translate market intelligence into a full content strategy and proposition of both exhibition features and content/conference programming
  • Team work - to understand the requirements of internal stakeholders helping them to meet their goals and still achieving your own
  • Advanced relationship building skills to develop external relationships with new and existing clients (including government, sponsors, exhibitors, delegates and associations)
  • External stakeholder management – ability to curate and manage sponsor expectations and content
  • Financial management - to propose and manage the content event budget maximising its ROI
  • Reporting – weekly, monthly, annual reporting on progress and KPI’s demonstrating the adherence to best practice and its benefits
  • Sales acumen - to ensure that you and the wider content team brief, motivate and input into the wider sales strategy/team
  • Marketing skills - the understanding of online and offline content marketing practices to brief, motivate and input into the wider marketing strategy
  • F2F meetings and presentation skills - experience in leading effective meetings both internally and externally
  • Business Development trips/Advisory boards/consultancy days - ability to organise, manage, plan, execute and prove an ROI
  • Onsite event execution – to deliver a high standard of onsite execution in line with the size and scale of each show
  • Competitor event benchmarking – carrying out thorough competitor event benchmarking including onsite research development and execution

Person Specification

  • Min 7 years B2B event content experience which must include paid-for delegate and sponsorship models
  • 4 years experience in a conference production team management role
  • Experience of working on large scale events with high level of onsite production requirements
  • Personal conference production experience in a commercial B2B environment
  • Proven experience of successfully delivering conference/content events across the globe (including but not limited to Europe, LATAM, Middle East and Asia)
  • Success in identifying, recruiting, retaining and developing high performing conference production team members
  • Proven track record of internal and external stakeholder influence and management to achieve objectives
  • Experience of working on events for government/public sector/education sector
  • A background/experience in the Education Technology sector would be beneficial
  • 2:1 degree
  • Stable career history
